His Girl Friday 1940
Storyline!
His Girl Friday 1940, Hildy Johnson (played by Rosalind Russell) returns to work at the Morning Post in New York City after four months. As a prominent reporter, he informs his boss, editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant), of his resignation. One of the reasons she left him was to ask Renault for a divorce from Walter himself, who he admitted was a terrible husband. Hildy also reveals to Walter that she will marry an insurance agent named Bruce Baldwin (played by Ralph Bellamy) in Albany the next day and will live with him and his mother (Alma Kruger) for at least a year. Not wanting to lose Hildy as a reporter or wife, Walter hatches a plan to delay her departure and convince her to stay with him. To do so, he devises a plan to tarnish Bruce’s reputation and leave the main story to Hildy. It’s about the illegal execution of cop killer Earl Williams (John Qualan). Though hesitant about Walter’s dark motives, Hildy explores the possibilities in this dark tale of corrupt officials, an incompetent sheriff (Jane Lockhart), a mayoral election and a blossoming romance with Bruce. But Hildy must ultimately decide if the thrill of her job is worth sacrificing her life for.
