Storyline!

Colvis Nevels, a hard-luck farmer from rural Kentucky, leaves for a factory job in busy Detroit during WWII. Colvis’ long-suffering wife, Gertie, a brilliant woodcarver who sticks to her old traditions, reluctantly joins him. When the Nevels’ finances become problematic due to the risks of city life and Colvis’ irresponsible spending, Gertie establishes a business manufacturing hand-carved dolls to support her family.
